Understanding Breastfeeding Benefits

Breastfeeding is the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival (WHO). Breast milk is ideal food for infants as it is easily digested and provides all the necessary nutrients required for child for the first six months. Breast milk contains vitamin, protein and fat in sufficient amount which is needed for proper growth of infants. Breast milk also contains antibodies which protect child to fight against viruses and bacteria. Breastfed babies have lower risk of having allergies, diabetes, asthma, respiratory illness and ear infections. Breastfed child have better mental development and perform better on IQ test. Breastfed infants have healthier weigh as they grow.
Breastfeeding helps mothers to recover from childbirth more quickly and easily. Breastfeeding burn extra calories and helps to return to what they weighted before they got pregnant. Breastfeeding releases hormone oxytocin, helps to return the uterus to its regular size and can reduce uterine bleeding after birth. Mothers who breastfeed have lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Breast feeding may reduce risk of type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and osteoporosis. Breastfeeding delays menstrual period which can help to extend the time between pregnancies. Breastfeeding is the one parenting behaviour which creates a unique and powerful physical and emotional connection between nursing mother and baby.
